Artistas: Darren Lay, Young Shakespeare Workshop, presenta fragmentos de
Arauco Domado: Una pieza magistral escrita por el dramaturgo español
Lope de Vega (1562–1635). A la misma altura de una obra histórica escrita
por Shakespeare, Arauco Domado es una obra épica especial para entender
las raíces del conflicto de culturas que reside aún en el corazón de la
identidad latina en América.

Música a cargo del Grupo Sin Fronteras conjunto de Seattle que interpreta
canciones de Centro y Sudamérica. En esta ocasión, los miembros Patricia
Mazuela (Chile), Abel Rocha (México) y Diego Coy (Colombia) adaptarán
música a los fragmentos de la obra teatral con instrumentos indígenas
mapuches, lo mismo que a la poesía que será recitada en este evento.

El componente poético estará a cargo de Mónica Lincopán, residente en el
Noroeste desde el 2001, originaria de Temuco, Chile, quien representando a
su nación Mapuche, leerá dos poemas en Mapudungun de la poeta Graciela
Huinao.
También leerá junto a la poeta local Eugenia Toledo, un poema de esta
última en homenaje a la Mujer Mapuche.

Audiencia: El evento es para todo el que desee asistir. Es gratis.

Who:
Music by Quichua Mashis (with Francia Recalde), a music group composed of Native Quichua members, all originally from Ecuador. The group has performed in Europe, South America, Japan, Canada and the United States. Since 1993, Quichua Mashis has been based in Seattle. They play traditional instruments, made of bamboo, sheep hooves, goat skins and armadillo shells.

Theater by the AFrican ConeXion Project (directed by Rose Cano), which shows the blending of African and Spanish heritage in the Americas. The Project seeks to unite Latino and African theater, dance and music of the diaspora, making the connection between Afro-Latino and African American roots, culture, and history.

Poetry by Jorge Enrique González-Pacheco, the Havana-born poet and writer. González-Pacheco is the author of numerous books of poetry, published in Mexico and Spain. A former staff member of the renowned Cuban Film Institute, he began publishing his poetry in 1991, when he was 22.

Sólo quien entra en literatura como se entra en religión, dispuesto a dedicar a esa vocación su tiempo, su energía, su esfuerzo, está en condiciones de llegar a ser verdaderamente un escritor y escribir una obra que lo trascienda.No hay novelistas precoces. Todos los grandes, los admirables novelistas, fueron, al principio, escribidores aprendices cuyo talento se fue gestando a base de constancia y convicción.La literatura es lo mejor que se ha inventado para defenderse contra el infortunio.En toda ficción, aun en la de la imaginación más libérrima, es posible rastrear un punto de partida, una semilla íntima, visceralmente ligado a una suma de vivencias de quien la fraguó. Me atrevo a sostener que no hay excepciones a esta regla y que, por lo tanto, la invención químicamente pura no existe en el dominio literario.La ficción es, por definición, una impostura -una realidad que no es y sin embargo finge serlo- y toda novela es una mentira que se hace pasar por verdad, una creación cuyo poder de persuasión depende exclusivamente del empleo eficaz de unas técnicas de ilusionismo y prestidigitación semejantes a las de los magos de los circos o teatros.En esto consiste la autenticidad o sinceridad del novelista: en aceptar sus propios demonios y en servirlos a la medida de sus fuerzas.El novelista que no escribe sobre aquello que en su fuero recóndito lo estimula y exige, y fríamente escoge asuntos o temas de una manera racional, porque piensa que de este modo alcanzará mejor el éxito, es inauténtico y lo más probable es que, por ello, sea también un mal novelista (aunque alcance el éxito: las listas de bestsellers están llenas de muy malos novelistas).La mala novela que carece de poder de persuasión, o lo tiene muy débil, no nos convence de la verdad de la mentira que nos cuenta.La historia que cuenta una novela puede ser incoherente, pero el lenguaje que la plasma debe ser coherente para que aquella incoherencia finja exitosamente ser genuina y vivir.La sinceridad o insinceridad no es, en literatura, un asunto ético sino estético.La literatura es puro artificio, pero la gran literatura consigue disimularlo y la mediocre lo delata.Para contar por escrito una historia, todo novelista inventa a un narrador, su representante o plenipotenciario en la ficción, él mismo una ficción, pues, como los otros personajes a los que va a contar, está hecho de palabras y sólo vive por y para esa novela.El de las novelas es un tiempo construido a partir del tiempo psicológico, no del cronológico, un tiempo subjetivo al que la artesanía del novelista da apariencia de objetividad, consiguiendo de este modo que su novela tome distancia y diferencie del mundo real.Lo importante es saber que en toda novela hay un punto de vista espacial, otro temporal y otro de nivel de realidad, y que, aunque muchas veces no sea muy notorio, los tres son esencialmente autónomos, diferentes uno de otro, y que de la manera como ellos se armonizan y combinan resulta aquella coherencia interna que es el poder de persuasión de una novela.Si un novelista, a la hora de contar una historia, no se impone ciertos límites (es decir, si no se resigna a esconder ciertos datos), la historia que cuenta no tendría principio ni fin.

Para House of Writers / Casa de Escritores es un orgullo presentar ante nuestra audiencia a Mauricio Leyva, un poeta maravilloso y muy fructífero cuyos poemas podrán disfrutar:

Mauricio Leyva es originario de la ciudad de Chilpancingo de los Bravo; es dramaturgo, poeta, ensayista, novelista, investigador y promotor cultural independiente, egresado de la Facultad de Derecho por la Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero con Estudios de Creación Literaria en el Claustro de Sor Juana en México.
Imparte Cursos de Creación Literaria y es miembro asociado de distintas organizaciones nacionales e internacionales

Sus poemas han sido publicados en antologías Estatales, Nacionales e Internacionales, ha editado las obras “Hojas Secas”, “Sentimientos de la Nación”, “Entre Copas” y “A tabaco y café”.
En el 2007 recibe, por parte de la revista “Reevolución” de Iguala, un reconocimiento por su valiosa aportación en la construcción del proyecto de rescate y difusión de la cultura guerrerense.
Por su destacada labor como promotor cultural, ha sido declarado ex alumno distinguido del Colegio de Bachilleres Plantel I, candidato al Premio al Mérito Juvenil Guerrero 2007 y 2008.
Difusor de nuestras raíces, ha brindado conferencias relacionadas en su mayoría con personajes y hechos de nuestro estado, que le han valido la invitación y el reconocimiento por parte del Congreso Local, de los medios de comunicación, así como de diversos ayuntamientos, escuelas públicas y privadas como la UNAM y la Universidad Autónoma de Morelos.
De igual manera, ha organizado y coordinado presentaciones de pintura y de libros; así como recitales, encuentros de escritores, ciclos de conferencias y talleres.

Recientemente, fue declarado Huésped Distinguido de la Ciudad y Puerto de Acapulco y fue nominado al Premio al Mérito Civil “Juan Ruiz de Alarcón”.

Actualmente, Mauricio Leyva es ya, uno de los escritores guerrerenses contemporáneos por excelencia, cuyo principal sello distintivo son sus producciones y obras de investigación que contribuyen a enriquecer el acervo cultural de nuestro Estado.

A contra piel

Piel a contra piel,

Hi!

A lot is happening at HoW/CdE, as we move forward with our love for our language and its promotion in our area as well as across the country and beyond.

HoW participated last Sunday in the first Latino Expo that has taken place on this side of the mountains. We considered it a success in many ways.

Thanks to You Decide, tú Decides newspaper for taking the lead to showcase the fact that Latinos can be and are also business people.

At the Expo, we joined forces with Lililip, a local, woman owned business that produces the greatest animations for marketing purposes. HoW is helping them become culturally appropriate and linguistically acurate for the Hispanic market. We are very excited about this joint venture and look forward to much success.

Furthermore, HoW is also attending the Acapulco World Congress of Poets. My partner will be attending and actively seeking customers for our writing and literature courses as well as for our translation and editing services.

Finally, we are deepening our connections with Conexion-marketing (thanks to Lauri and Gigi) and joining our blogs. Thanks for strengthening our roots in the community.

Spanish through Literature

A few years ago, I decided to write a novel. I’d been mulling over the idea for some time, until the day came when the “daily grind” overwhelmed my patience. Without another thought, I grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, locked it away in my trunk for all impertinent and negative thoughts and sat down in front of my computer screen to give full rein to my imagination. That’s when all my problems began.

My first sentence came out in Spanish, and my second in English. The third was a confused hotchpotch of both languages. I started again. This time, a whole paragraph came out in Spanish. The next was in Spanglish, and the third stubbornly refused to materialize. Months passed and there I was, feverishly writing and erasing, without ever making up my mind which language to write the blessed novel in.

I went for help. The experts counseled me to write in English. It’s a much bigger market, they pointed out; it will open up more doors for you. My relatives, on the other hand, threatened to stop speaking to me; I would be betraying my roots, they raged. In the end, my heart spoke up and whispered the whole story into my ear. It told me the whole fifty-six chapters, without stopping, in the only language that it knew how to speak: Spanish.

Deciding which language to write in is not the only challenge that bilingual writers face. Those of us living in this city also battle with a lack of resources. As far as I am aware, there is no place we can go to learn, improve or simply share our lovingly crafted writing in our mother tongue.

Outside academic spheres, there are no conferences for writers in Spanish, or public events that promote the use and enjoyment of the language. Those obstinate souls, like yours truly, who decide to learn on their own, very soon come up against a snag: the stock of educational material sold in bookstores is paltry; in general, not even the big bookstores offer a decent collection of literature in Spanish.

Writing in Spanish also presents the challenge of translation. To be able to participate in contests, or to apply for residencies or scholarships, you have to translate your work into English. Apart from the obvious expense, the process necessarily implies a loss of expressiveness: the music inherent in our lines, the passion that certain words incite, or the flavor of untranslatable terms like “nata”, or “estrenar” or “apapachar”. How, for example, can we sing to our English-speaking grandson a Spanish rhyme like los ricos raspados revoltosos corrían rápido rumbo al río para no derretirse? (…the delicious snow cones ran quickly to the river so as not to melt?)

Fortunately, every cloud has a silver lining and, as the Spanish saying goes, “when life brings you lemons, start making lemonade”. And that’s exactly what we writers working in Spanish have had to do: make lemonade – although “making Sangría” might be a better name for it. By the force of our own wills – or by elbowing our way forward – we have carved out our own space, a little niche where Spanish is celebrated, in all its brilliant diversity, including all of its rich and flavorful regionalisms. We have named this space “House of Writers / Casa de Escritores”, the academy that Paola Casla Taylor and I have founded, to a small degree out of necessity, and to a large degree out of nostalgia.

“House of Writers / Casa de Escritores” is an academy of Spanish that offers on-line workshops in writing and literature, including courses for students whose inherited language is Spanish. Our on-line method facilitates wide flexibility in terms of schedules, while limiting the drawbacks and expenses of travel. For students who live here in the city and prefer personal contact, we provide monthly meetings with their teachers on our premises, located downtown. To those who request it, we offer project guidance from beginning to end, offering them advice on the planning, drafting, translation and publication of their work.

The academy is home to university professors and authors who have received awards and prizes for their publications. And our editing and translation team is made up of translators dedicated specifically to the translation of literature.

In keeping with our mission to promote bilingualism in the community, “House of Writers / Casa de Escritores” frequently organizes bilingual lectures in Seattle. On September 26, for example, we will participate in the first of a series of four lectures with the title: Mas allá de una lengua (“Beyond One Language”). The event, supported by the city and by a collective of organizations, will be a celebration of literature in Spanish, English and Purhépecha. Of the six authors who will present their works, five are professors with Casa de Escritores.

“House of Writers / Casa de Escritores” was founded for our students to enjoy a space that was denied to other writers. And so that grandmothers like me can write and sing their out-of-tune rhymes at full volume, without having to flatten the rolling Spanish “rrrr”s.
